Ingredients DIY natural lip balm
Beeswax
You can use beeswax pellets or a whole piece of beeswax. I always have it at home as I use it to make salves or beeswax candles.
Beeswax helps retain moisture in the skin and contains vitamin A, which is valuable for cell reconstruction. Produced by bees to build honeycombs, beeswax has antibacterial properties and is effective in treating inflammation, burns, and bruises. (1)
coconut oil
I suggest using its liquid version (coconut oil fractionated) so you can infuse herbs in it for additional benefits.
Coconut oil is an excellent choice for cracked and dry lips. It increases hydration and reduces water loss in dry skin. Applied on the lips, coconut oil adds moisture and gives them a shine.
Moreover, lip balm with UV protection might do the trick. Coconut oil contains an SPF factor of 4-5, providing UV protection.
Essential oils
You can use several essential oils to adjust the flavor, scent, and medicinal benefits of your lip balm.
Orange Essential Oil: May help boost collagen production and absorption of vitamin C.
Spearmint or Peppermint Essential Oil: Ideal if you like a cooling and soothing effect.
Lavender Essential Oil: Smells amazing and helps soothe and calm chapped lips.
Rose Essential Oil: Offers excellent skin benefits and a lovely fragrance.
Chamomile Essential Oil: Known for its soothing properties and pleasant smell
shea butter lip balm with red clover oil
Shea butter
Incorporating shea butter into your lip balm slightly alters its consistency, enhances its scent, and enhances its medicinal properties. Shea butter also makes the balm softer and smoother to apply.
Some people prefer unrefined shea butter, which smells better than refined. However, refined shea butter loses some of its benefits. Here is an article that compares them both. Â You could even use cocoa butter or mango butter instead.
Shea butter comes from nuts of the shea tree. Raw shea butter is rich in vitamins E and A and contains many saturated fats. As a skin moisturizer, it offers anti-aging benefits and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles (2). Its anti-inflammatory properties also make it an excellent skin conditioning agent.Â
Adding herbs by infusing in Oil
By infusing herbs in fractionated coconut oil, you can create infused oils with added medicinal properties, each unique to the herbs used. Feel free to use other carrier oils like almond oil or jojoba oil.
Here are some herbs to consider:
Calendula: Known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, great for sensitive skin.
Rose Petals: Rich in antioxidants, rose petals offer hydrating and soothing properties, making them excellent for dry or sensitive lips.
Rosehips: packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, rosehip oil promotes collagen production and skin regeneration.
Red Clover: Red Clover oil contains isoflavonoids that help slow down signs of aging on the skin. Isoflavonoids act as estrogens and have the ability to increase collagen production and add moisture to the lips. They also improve skin thickness, skin elasticity, hydration, and reduce shrinks (3). Â
Lemon balm: Lemon balm is effective against cold sores due to its antiviral properties. Infusing lemon balm in coconut oil for your homemade lip balm can offer additional support in combating cold sores and promoting healing.
Chamomile: Offers calming effects and helps reduce redness and irritation.
Lavender: Promotes relaxation and has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Rosemary: Stimulates circulation and provides antioxidant properties.
Peppermint: Adds a cooling sensation and helps soothe irritated skin.
Echinacea: Known for its immune-boosting and skin-healing propertiesÂ

How to infuse herbs in oil?
Prepare the Herbs: Select the herbs you want to infuse and cut them in small pieces to release their aromatic oils.
Combine with Oil: Place the herbs in a clean, dry glass jar. Cover them with your chosen carrier oil and ensure they are fully submerged.
Infusion: Seal the jar tightly and place it in a warm, sunny spot for 2-4 weeks. Alternatively, you can speed up the process by using a double boiler or slow cooker on low heat for 4-8 hours. Make sure to monitor the temperature to prevent overheating.
Strain and Store: Once infused, strain the oil through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the herbs. Transfer the infused oil into a clean, dry glass container, and store it in a cool, dark place.
vitamin e oil
Adding vitamin E to lip balm provides powerful antioxidant protection and deep hydration, keeping your lips soft and smooth. It also aids in healing chapped lips and extends the shelf life of your lip balm by preventing oils from becoming rancid.
honey
Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture, helping to keep your lips hydrated. In addition, honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help heal cracked and chapped lips.
tinted lip balm
Beetroot Powder for tinted balm
Beetroot, rich in antioxidants, hydrates and moisturizes the skin while supporting collagen production with vitamin C. Its deep rich color comes from betanin, making beetroot approved as a colorant in food and cosmetics. YOu can find it in burt’s bees lip balm too.
Step-by-step DIY beeswax lip balm recipe instructions
Once your infused oil is ready, you can start making this beeswax lip balm. It takes just few minutes to make.
Use a double boiler to gently heat the shea butter, coconut oil, and wax.
Once all ingredients are fully melted, remove from heat and add infused oil (if you are using it) and add your favorite essential oil. Stir to combine.
Prepare your lip balm tubes or containers with lids and simply pour the mixture while it is still warm. Don’t wait for the mixture to cool down, as it will solidify and make it impossible to fill the tubes.Â
Add lids to the containers and place them in a cool place to solidify.
