Cinnamon Ornaments – The Dancing Herbalist

This is a super easy and fun holiday craft for all ages. If you feel up for it, you can even make your own apple sauce to use which is a great treat to enjoy while you make these crafts. These can make great decorations for a tree, lovely air fresheners for your car during the holiday months, or great gifts for family, friends, or coworkers.

Ingredients

dry, powdered cinnamon, approximately 2 oz per ornament

apple sauce, not chunky

oven, baking sheet, parchment paper

Instructions

If you are choosing to make your own apple sauce, you can prepare that first.

In a small bowl, place a tablespoon or so of apple sauce. Slowly, add in cinnamon a little at a time and mix it until it is well combined. Continue to add cinnamon until it forms a dough like consistency but is not crumbling. After a time you may choose to use your hands to roll the dough in cinnamon to collect additional cinnamon into the dough. You want to add as much cinnamon as possible with out it crumbling so it will hold its shape.

After you have a solid dough of cinnamon and apple sauce, flatten your dough to approximately 1/4 in thick. Either shape this dough to your desired shape or use a cookie cutter to make a shape you enjoy. Be sure to use a toothpick to add a hole if you want to hang this.

Place your ornament onto parchment paper and onto a baking sheet in the oven. I use as low of a heat as my oven allows until the ornament is completely dry. After 10 minutes you may want to flip over your ornaments. Remove the ornaments from the oven to cool before the edges begin to turn dark brown. You may also consider using a dehydrator and if you do, let me know in the comments how well it worked for you.
