The Perfect Bloody Rosemary Cocktail

Summer soirees are the perfect occasion to gather with friends and family, bask in the warm sunshine, and indulge in refreshing and delicious drinks. This year, why not elevate your party game and impress your guests with unique and flavorful botanical cocktails? By incorporating herbs and botanicals into your drinks, you not only create a memorable and sophisticated experience but also provide health benefits that traditional cocktails lack. From garden-to-glass recipes to creative mixology techniques, botanical cocktails offer a whole new level of refreshment and taste that your guests won’t soon forget.

One such botanical cocktail that is perfect for summer is the Bloody Rosemary.

The Bloody Rosemary

Traditionally a morning drink, this botanical twist on a bloody mary can be enjoyed morning or evening. It’s a smidge on the sweet side—herbal bitters are necessary to bring this colorful drink into the perfect balance. Note that orange liqueur or syrup can be substituted for the blood orange liqueur or syrup. Enjoy as a cocktail or mocktail in a rocks glass over ice with a fresh rosemary sprig for garnish.

Ingredients

1 blood orange wheel, sliced ¼-inch thick from the midsection of the fruit

1 sprig fresh rosemary

1 fl oz (30 mL) gin (or cooled rosemary tea)

1 fl oz (30 mL) blood orange liqueur (or blood orange syrup)

2 tsp (10 mL) rosemary syrup

½ fl oz (15 mL) freshly squeezed lemon juice

½ fl oz (15 mL) freshly squeezed blood orange juice

3 dashes (30 drops) orange bitters (or orange vinegar)

Additional fresh rosemary sprig for garnish (optional)

Directions

Fill a rocks glass with ice. Wedge a fresh blood orange slice between the ice and the side of the glass, and set the glass aside.

Muddle a rosemary sprig in a glass canning jar by pressing it against the glass with the back of a spoon to release its aromatics.

To make a cocktail, combine the gin, blood orange liqueur, rosemary syrup, lemon and blood orange juices, and orange bitters with the muddled rosemary in the glass canning jar.

To make a mocktail, combine the rosemary tea, blood orange syrup, rosemary syrup, lemon and blood orange juices, and orange vinegar with the muddled rosemary in the glass canning jar.

Fill the jar ⅔ full of ice, cap, and shake hard for 20 seconds. Strain the liquid off the ice and pour it into the rocks glass.

Garnish with an additional rosemary sprig nestled between the ice and the side of the glass, if desired.
